Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini: how to pick without reading 40 reviews

Short answer: Claude is the strongest for writing, long documents, and building things; ChatGPT is the flexible all-rounder with the biggest ecosystem; Gemini makes the most sense if your whole life already lives in Google Workspace. All three are genuinely good, which is exactly why the comparison articles feel useless. The real question is not “which AI is best,” it’s “which one fits the work you actually do.”

I use all three. I built my app with one of them. Let me save you the 40 tabs.

What they have in common (more than anyone admits)

Ask any of the three to summarize a report, draft an email, brainstorm names, or explain something confusing, and you will get a competent answer from all of them. For everyday tasks, the overlap is enormous. Anyone who tells you one of them is useless is selling something, probably a newsletter.

The differences show up at the edges: the work you do most, the tools you already pay for, and how each one feels to talk to. That last one sounds soft. It isn’t. You’ll use the assistant you enjoy talking to and quietly abandon the one you don’t.

Where each one earns its keep

Claude is my daily driver, and I’ll admit the bias upfront: I built Gut Goddess, my gut health app, by talking to Claude. No engineers, just me, a lot of iteration, and one bug that took three days to hunt down. Claude is exceptional at writing that doesn’t sound like AI wrote it, at holding very long documents in its head, and at coding. If your work is words, strategy, or building software without a technical team, start here.

ChatGPT is the Swiss army knife. Strong image generation, voice mode that’s genuinely pleasant, custom GPTs, and the largest pile of integrations because everyone builds for it first. If your work is varied and visual, or you want one tool that does a bit of everything, start here.

Gemini wins on one thing decisively: it lives inside Google. If your company runs on Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Meet, Gemini reaching into those directly is a real advantage that no benchmark captures. Deep research and video understanding are strong too. If Google Workspace is your home, start here.

The 30-minute test that beats every review

Reviews test the reviewer’s tasks. You need to test yours.

Pick one real task from your week. Not “write a poem about a cat.” A real one: your monthly report, a tricky client email, that spreadsheet analysis you dread. Give the identical prompt to all three, free tiers are fine, and compare what comes back.

Then push each one twice. “Shorter.” “More direct.” “You missed the point about pricing.” How a model handles correction tells you more than its first answer does.

One will feel right. Trust that over any leaderboard, including this post.

What not to base your decision on

Benchmark scores, launch-week hype, and your loudest colleague’s opinion. The models leapfrog each other every few months, so “best” is a moving target and the gap at the top is thin. Pricing is nearly identical, roughly 20 dollars a month for each pro tier.

Pick one, learn it properly, and revisit in six months. A tool you know deeply beats a “better” tool you use shallowly. Every time.

FAQ

Which is better, Claude or ChatGPT?

For writing quality, long documents, and coding, Claude has the edge. For image generation, voice, and breadth of integrations, ChatGPT does. For most everyday tasks they are closer than the internet suggests, so test both on your own work.

Is Gemini as good as ChatGPT and Claude?

For general chat it’s competitive, and inside Google Workspace it’s often the most practical choice because it connects directly to Gmail, Docs, and Sheets. Outside the Google ecosystem it loses its main advantage.

Should I pay for more than one AI subscription?

Start with one. Most people extract maybe a tenth of what a single subscription can do. Add a second only when you hit a real limit, not because a headline made you nervous.

This exact question, “which one should we use,” opens half my workshops. The honest answer depends on your work, your data, and your team, which is a conversation, not a blog post. Book a 1-1 AI session or a team workshop through my contact page and we’ll settle it in an hour, with your real tasks on the table. Bring the dreaded spreadsheet.
